These instructions will show you how to setup or troubleshoot
a dialup connection using MacOS 7.5 or 7.6. If you are using a later version of MacOS, please follow the appropriate guidelines for either MacOS 8 or 9 or MacOS X. Note: Alphalink does not support internet connections on versions of MacOS earlier than 7.5.
Please ensure your modem is fully functional before commencing
these installation procedures. If your modem is not functioning
correctly please contact your modem manufacturer or retailer.
If you have been previously connected to another Internet Service
Provider, these procedures will overwrite their settings.
Configuration and Troubleshooting
PLEASE NOTE: To connect to Alphalink you must have the following
software:
- MacTCP with a PPP extension
- ConfigPPP or MACPPP or FreePPP
- A web browser. (eg: Netscape or Internet Explorer)
Unfortunately we do not supply this software, but you probably
already have it on your system. If not, please contact your Mac
dealer, they should be able to supply you with it.
If you do have it, follow these steps to setup your dialup connection:
- Go to the Apple menu
- Click on Control Panel
- Open MAC TCP
- Select the PPP icon
- Click on the More button
- Select IP assigned by server
- Select Class C
- Set Domain to: alphalink.com.au
- Click OK
- Go back to the Control Panel
- Open your PPP software. (This will be either ConfigPPP, MacPPP
or FreePPP)
- Click ADD (or NEW)
- For PPP server name enter Alphalink
- Click OK
- Select Settings
- Make sure there is no X in terminal window
- Put an X on Hang up on close
- Put an X on Quiet Mode
- PPP server should be: Alphalink
- Click on Options
- Click the Configure button
- PPP server name should be: Alphalink
- For port speed select 57600
- For Flow control select CTS & RTS (DTR)
- Tone dial needs to be on
- Enter the dialin number for your account (NOT your own
phone number!)
- Leave Modem INIT blank, unless you have been given an
INIT string by your modem manufacturer.
- Select LCP Options
- Under Maximum receive unit, change both boxes that have 1500
to 500.
- Click OK
- Select Authentication
- For Authorization ID, enter your Alphalink login name (ie. loginname@alphalink.com.au)
- For Password, enter your Alphalink password
- Click Done
- Click on the Open button to connect to Alphalink
