It is not uncommon to experience initial problems accessing secure sites such as Netbanking, share trading or shopping sites. Often, you need to have your browser set up in a certain way for them work. The first thing that you should do is make sure that your proxies are turned off. To do this, see the instructions on our Proxy Settings page.
If you can not find the options detailed there, or they are set correctly and
it still is not working, you should also make sure that you are
using the latest version of your browser.
- For Internet Explorer, the current version is v6.0 SP1 (or
v5.5 SP2 for Windows 95 users). Go to Windows Update at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
to download and install it. While you are there, make sure that
you have all of the Critical Updates installed, as well as the
128-bit encryption update.
- For Netscape, this is currently Communicator v4.8. You can
download it from Netscape's site at: http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive/client_archive47x.html.
- Netscape 6 or 7 users please note: Netscape 6/7 is not currently
recommended for secure site use, as several sites do not support
it. However, if you want to upgrade it you can download the
latest version from Netscape's
site.
- Mozilla and Firefox users should make sure that they are using the latest
stable release. These can be downloaded
from: http://www.mozilla.org/.
If it is still not working, make sure that all the security options
are enabled. To do this:
- For Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu and choose Internet
Options. Click on the Security tab, then click on the Internet
icon in the top box. Click the Default Level button. Then click
on the Advanced tab, and under the Security section down the
bottom, make sure that Use SSL 2.0, Use SSL 3.0 and Use TLS
1.0 are all ticked.
- For Netscape 4, click the Security button on the toolbar.
Click Navigator down the left hand side, and make sure that
both Enable SSL options are ticked. For each, click the Configure
SSL button and make sure that every option is ticked except
'No encryption with an MD5 MAC'.
- For Netscape 6/7 or Mozilla, go to the Edit menu and choose
Preferences. Double-click on Privacy & Security, then click
on SSL. Make sure that all boxes are ticked under SSL Protocol
Versions. Then click the Cipher button and make sure that every
option is ticked except 'No encryption with an MD5 MAC'.
If after all that you are still having problems, check with the
help files or the support team for the site, as they might have
certain requirements for use of the site (for example, if the
site only supports TLS encryption, Netscape 4 will not work as it
does not support it).
